HEATH STRING QUARTET

A highlight of the Haydn theme running through this year’s season is a performance of one of his most colourful string quartets. After studying with Haydn, who had invented the string quartet, Beethoven wrote his first quartet and became the unrivalled master of this art form. Debussy’s only effort in this field is delicately balanced between Romanticism and Impressionism. The prize-winning Heath Quartet formed in 2002 and has risen quickly to become one of the most exciting ensembles playing today.
Haydn: Quartet in D ‘The Frog’
Beethoven: Quartet in F Op 18/1
Debussy: Quartet (1893)

JAMIE WALTON cello,
& DANIEL GRIMWOOD piano

We particularly welcome the return of Jamie Walton and his regular duo partner, Daniel Grimwood. Jamie possesses a distinctive sound and pure approach to music making
while Daniel is carving a reputation as one of the most varied and original musicians of his generation. While both artists have developed highly successful individual and international careers they are both passionate chamber musicians who work closely together in making many recordings which encompass
the music of several composers whose works form part of their forthcoming concert.
Mendelssohn: Cello sonata No.1. Op 45
Schumann: Fantastiestücke Op 73 & Bunte Blätter Op 99
Chopin: Introduction & Polonaise Op 3
Shostakovich: Sonata in D. Op 40

VALENTIN SCHIEDERMAIR - PIANO RECITAL
Sponsored by the Worshipful Company of Musicians

The 200th anniversary of Chopin’s birth on 1 March 2010 celebrates this most romantic of composers. The love of his life was the controversial novelist George Sand, hailed as the ‘greatest female genius of any country or age’. Eight summers she spent with Chopin at her summer chateau in Nohant and they were the creative highlight of both their lives. Here Chopin composed most of his later works and one of his greatest, the Sonata in B minor. German pianist Valentin Schiedermair has been praised for his ‘consummate romantic interpretations’ and ‘magic sense of colour’.
Chopin recital: Nocturne Op 48/2,
Ballade No.3,
Mazurkas Op 50,
Impromptu No.3, Barcarolle and Sonata in B minor

concert with a brilliant piece of Russian music.
Haydn: Quartet Op 33 (Russian)
Mozart: Quartet K.465.
Puccini: Crisantemi Elegy

THE KUNGSBACKA PIANO TRIO
No pre-concert interview.
Social event for ticket holders 6.30pm-7.30pm

Haydn’s delightful Trio in C was written for the talented London pianist Therese Jansen and reveals some of Haydn’s most taxing piano writing. The anniversary themes of Haydn and Schumann conclude in this concert. There could be no better work than his second Piano Trio to show the depth of romantic feeling in Schumann’s music. After a 20th century rarity by Copland this romantic theme continues in' Dvorák’s famous Dumky Trio where each of the six movements has its own individual shape. For our final concert of the season we are delighted to welcome the Kungsbacka Piano Trio from Sweden, one of the outstanding chamber ensembles of their generation.
Haydn: Trio in C. Hob XV 27
Schumann: Trio No.2. Op 80
Copland: Vitebsk
Dvorák: ‘Dumky’ Trio Op 90
